How To Double an Ecommerce Store’s Orders with Chloe Thomas from eCommerce Masterplan

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Chloe Thomas on her eCommerce MasterPlan podcast recently, where we dove deep into strategies that can help you double your eCommerce store orders without relying on paid ads.

As someone who’s helped many businesses scale, I shared insights from my own experience building successful campaigns for retail brands.

In case you missed it, I’m including two options for you to listen through: Youtube, and the podcast player.

Here’s a quick rundown of the key strategies I discussed that can help you drive more sales and achieve bigger results in your eCommerce business.

      1. Prioritise Storytelling Over Discounts

Instead of relying on discounts to drive sales, I always advise my clients to focus on storytelling.

A compelling brand story creates a deeper connection with your audience, making them more likely to buy – and more likely to come back for more. Discounting might bring in the short-term sales, but storytelling fosters long-term loyalty.

When you take a typical eCommerce offer like a Black Friday discount of 50-80%, but you wrap it in story-telling, it takes your entire business to a whole new level. Not just because of the memorability of it, but because you can get more cut-through and even cheaper conversions when you make it your unique BFCM.

We talk about concept design a lot in the Double Orders course.

Takeaway: Weave a unique concept or story into your campaigns to drive emotional connections and build customer loyalty.

      2. Use Urgency and Scarcity to Drive Action

During the interview, we discussed how important it is to create a sense of urgency and scarcity around your offers. This is one of my favorite strategies for driving conversions. When customers believe that they’re missing out, they’re much more likely to act fast.

A campaign isn’t really a campaign without a start and an end date, and if you’re clear about those, you can get more hype and more buy-in from the customers, driving more performance without necessarily having to use ad spend.

Takeaway: Implement time-sensitive offers and communicate scarcity to encourage quick purchases.

      3. Plan Your Campaigns Well in Advance

Planning is the backbone of any successful campaign. I emphasised to Chloe that brands should start planning their campaigns 12 weeks in advance.

This gives you ample time to develop your messaging, creative, and logistics so that everything is perfectly aligned when it’s time to launch.

It also means that once a campaign is live, you get to sit in the campaign and performance-manage it, making sure that you’re able to hit your targets because you’re not consumed with making marketing while your offer is live.

Performance-management is such a hack to hitting targets, and I always recommend inside our course at Double Orders that you make sure you’re doing it while an offer is live. There’s so much money to be made for store’s in this phase.

Takeaway: Plan your campaigns well in advance to ensure smooth execution and maximum impact.

      4. Refine and Optimise Previous Campaigns

Rather than reinventing the wheel every time, I encourage businesses to refine their past successful campaigns. By tracking what’s worked and continuously improving on those strategies, you can achieve more predictable and consistent results without starting from scratch each time.

I find a lot of junior marketers are shocked and horrified by this suggestion, but here’s what I’ve discovered over the last ten years of marketing eCommerce brands… the marketing doesn’t need to change every year.

Most of the time, it needs to be done the same but to a higher standard visually/aesthetically and with more more marketing involved.

This is why we recommend storing your marketing, not making it from scratch, year-on-year.

Takeaway: Optimise your successful campaigns by building on the elements that worked.
