How To Build A Successful Career In Marketing: The eCommerce Edition

If you’re just getting started in marketing or even if you’ve been in the game for a little while and still feel like you’re not getting the results you’ve been aiming for, you’re not alone.

Many people are faced with the same question:

How do I truly build a career in marketing, especially in the eCommerce space, that not only feels fulfilling but also opens doors to bigger opportunities?

If this resonates with you, keep reading.

      I’ve been there too.

When I first started in marketing, I had absolutely zero experience. I didn’t know the first thing about digital marketing, let alone eCommerce.

But with time, patience, and a lot of trial and error and… oh, building over 200 eCommerce brands using my own blood, sweat and tears, I’ve created a marketing career that has allowed me to work with global brands, make an impact, and design campaigns that have generated millions in revenue.

Today, I’m going to show you exactly how you can build a successful marketing career in eCommerce and stop feeling like you’re just spinning your wheels.

The Real Struggle: How to Break Into eCommerce Marketing

So here’s the thing: the marketing world can feel overwhelming when you’re starting out.

There are so many tools to learn, platforms to navigate, and strategies to understand. As a newbie in the eCommerce space, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to do everything at once—becoming an expert in SEO, social media, copywriting, email marketing, and so on. It’s a lot.

      I totally get it.

When I first began, I thought I had to master everything all at once.

Then I thought I had to become an expert at one thing.

But what I’ve come to realise about eCommerce marketing is that to be successful, you need to be a generalist and you need to very good at, well, pretty much everything.

That’s part of the service, especially to smaller brands.

But what has really helped me stand out is the results from the campaigns, and this is exactly what I teach inside of the Double Orders book and Double Orders course.

If you’re feeling lost or overwhelmed by where to begin, don’t worry. I’ve outlined the path I took to get from zero experience to landing big-name clients like Brunetti Oro—and how you can do the same.

The Key to a Successful Career in Marketing: Mastering the Basics, With a Twist

It sounds cliché, but let me tell you: mastering the basics is absolutely crucial.

If you don’t have a solid understanding of the fundamentals—like writing compelling copy, understanding your audience, and creating clear campaigns—you’re going to struggle.

You need to be able to rapidly produce marketing campaigns for your clients and solve problems once they go live and they’re not performing as they need to be if you really want longevity in this space.

I would say this is the core pillar of the reason I’ve had such a great career marketing.

Clients know I won’t let them down and I’ll go until the job is done (and because everything in eCommerce is about results, until the $ target is hit).

What worked for me, and what will work for you, is focusing on mastering one or two key areas first.

These are the two I would recommend:

      1. Become a fantastic copy-writer.
      2. Get really good at email marketing.

I didn’t become the go-to eCommerce marketing strategist by trying to learn everything at once.

I first became a great copywriter, then I became a great email marketing. Then I got really good at campaigns—the big, overarching strategies that drive real results. Once I learned to craft campaigns that were cohesive and data-driven, everything else started to fall into place.

The Mistakes That Hold You Back

In my early days, I made plenty of mistakes that I now look back on as valuable lessons.

I tried to do everything at once and burned out quickly. I would often close a tonne of clients all at the same time, and that meant they weren’t all getting the results they could be.

And the big one that I didn’t learn until I learnt how to scale an ad account? I underestimated the importance of understanding data.

      But the biggest mistake?

Thinking I had to “know it all” before taking action. That mindset left me stuck.

If you’re struggling with your career because you feel overwhelmed by everything you think you need to know, I’m here to tell you: stop.

Go and pitch the dream client and promise you’ll work yourself to the bone to get them results.

(I know that’s controversial, but you’ve got to start somewhere – and you need runs on the board!)

      • Be consistent with your learning.
      • Track your results and learn from them.
      • Push your limits without feeling like you need to be perfect.

You don’t need years of experience to get results. With the right strategies and the right mindset, you can skip a lot of the early-stage mistakes and get ahead faster.

That’s everything I teach at Double Orders, and you’ll love the book and course that go together.

Building the Marketing Career You Want: How to Get Started and What to Avoid

After years of refining my approach and working with clients across industries, I realised that what truly matters in this field is delivering results.

It’s about being able to show the impact you’re having on the businesses you work with.

When I landed my second “big name” client, Brunetti Oro, it wasn’t just because I had years of experience under my belt. It was because I had a clear, well-tested framework for running successful marketing campaigns—and I had proven it with smaller clients first.

That’s how you build a credible portfolio and get to the point where you can confidently pitch and land big clients.
