How To Build An Iconic Marketing Client Portfolio ft. My $20m Retail Group Marketing Client

How to win an iconic, flagship client for your marketing business

Building a standout marketing portfolio is one of the most valuable assets any eCommerce marketer can have. It’s proof of your skill, your results, and your ability to take an eCommerce brand from good to great.

But what does it take to build a portfolio that not only impresses clients but also attracts the biggest names in the industry?

For me, it all started with one simple principle:

      Focus on results over aesthetics.

When I first started my marketing career, I didn’t have the luxury of big clients or an impressive portfolio.

I was a small business owner, trying to figure out how to make my eCommerce marketing work for my skincare brand. The stakes were high—I needed results, and fast. There was no room for theory or guesswork.

So, I turned to marketing campaigns.

After seeing the success of brands like Frank Body, who used campaigns to go from unknown to iconic, I became obsessed with how powerful and scalable this approach was.

I dedicated myself to mastering the art of marketing campaigns—refining and adapting it over the years for a variety of clients, big and small.

But here’s the thing: As I grew my skills, I wasn’t just working to get results—I was building my portfolio.

How I Went From Zero Experience to Landing Brunetti Oro

Fast forward to one of the proudest moments of my marketing career: landing Brunetti Oro, a renowned Italian dessert brand based in Melbourne, as a client.

Now, if you’re not familiar with Brunetti, it’s a brand that exudes tradition, quality, and Italian excellence and the people of Melbourne talk about the business as an iconic, landmark of an institution.

Securing this client was a major milestone, and here’s how I did it:

      1. Start Small, But Dream Big

When I first started working with clients, I knew I needed results.

The smaller the business, the harder it was to convince them to invest in marketing… but also?

The harder it was to actually get them the results they not only wanted, but needed, to grow to their next level.

I understood that small brands have big dreams and just need someone who’s willing to go above and beyond to help them get there, and that as their chosen eCommerce marketing manager, that was my responsibility to them.

I started by helping them create cost-effective marketing campaigns—ones that didn’t rely heavily on paid ads, but instead focused on creating real, tangible results with organic reach.

And then, this is the part that I really drive home in my Double Orders course – you must performance manage your marketing once it’s out in the world.

      Without this? No results.

And it’s not good enough to say “well, I can’t guarantee results“. Don’t ever let me catch you uttering those words out loud.

Because you know what you can guarantee to your eCommerce brands?

That you won’t stop trying and pushing yourself (and the marketing you make) to help them.

I teach you how to do push yourself and your marketing quickly and efficiently inside of the Double Orders course. You’ll love how simple it is to implement and how much of a ✨difference✨ it makes to your eCommerce marketing results.

Yes, it’s a bit more work, but when they really start winning, it means you can charge more and go after bigger and more lucrative client work.

      Win-win-win.

      2. Build A Portfolio Of Results, Not Just Pretty Designs

Instead of focusing on aesthetics or trendy designs (which many young marketers tend to get caught up in), I focused on building case studies based on results.

      • How many new subscribers did we gain from a campaign?
      • How much revenue did the brand generate during a particular promotion?
      • How much PROFIT did they have after the campaign?

By proving that I could generate real business outcomes, my portfolio became more powerful. The more results I could show, the bigger the clients I attracted.

Remember, eCommerce brands don’t need pretty marketing – they need orders out the door and cash in the bank.

      3. Get Results, Then Ask For Referrals

As a marketer, word of mouth is everything.

After working with a few smaller brands and proving my value, I didn’t just rest on my laurels—I used my results to get referrals. The more successful I was in helping my clients grow, the more they raved about my work to their peers.

This led to bigger opportunities and ultimately landed me clients like Brunetti Oro.

But it wasn’t just about the results. I also worked on refining my communication, my creative direction, and my approach to marketing.

I treated each client’s brand with the same level of passion and care I would give my own.

As a result, my portfolio grew, and my reputation followed.

What You Can Learn From My Decade-Long Career In Marketing

Building an iconic marketing portfolio isn’t about chasing prestige from the start—it’s about consistently delivering results that speak for themselves. It’s about focusing on your client’s business growth first and foremost, and making sure your work drives measurable business outcomes.

      And when I say that?

I don’t mean followers and engagement.

I mean cold-hard cash in the bank and orders out the door.

That’s what eCommerce brands want, right?

As I reflect on my journey, I realise it was all about proving myself time and time again.

Whether it was growing my own skincare brand or helping others do the same, it was my obsession with campaigns and delivering results that helped me stand out.

Focus on delivering results (orders out the door + cash in the bank), and your portfolio will build itself.
